Here at the Digital Bakery, we often hear about what the best practices are for websites and what a website should look like but there’s one huge issue that no one seems to pick up on…
“What works well for one website doesn’t mean it will work well for another”.
We always see articles and blogs claiming that these different tips and tricks work well across the board and are guaranteed to give your website the best results. But they never mention that what works for one particular website, like an eCommerce website, won’t work as well for a different website, like a Brochure website. Naturally, there wouldn’t be an issue in trying out the recommendations but just because it worked well for one website, doesn’t mean it will work well for your website.
A perfect example from Jacob Baadsgaard over at Search Engine Land is the use of sticky nav bars. A lot of web designers encourage the use of these sticky nav bars where no matter how far down you scroll on a page the nav bar will always be in view. However, this doesn’t work well on every site. A website that relays on screen space would struggle with a sticky nav bar taking up precious space. Also, visitors to a site may become frustrated by the nav bar taking space that they want to view. An example could be to imagine shopping on a website where the nav bar is constantly blocking previous products and the only way to see them is to scroll back up, frustrating right?
Our experience from working with different clients has shown us that what can work very well for one doesn’t always have the same results for another. It really comes down to what the client wants for their website and what they want to gain from it.
At The Digital Bakery, we take into consideration, first and foremost, your business and what you want out of your website. We want to design the best website that works for YOU. See our website work here.
